For Shelters and Rescue Groups

Before Booking Spay/Neuter Surgery

Please be sure to read all instructions before booking a spay/neuter appointment.

  • Rabies vaccination is mandatory for dogs and cats 3 months of age and older if they are not already vaccinated.

  • All cats must be at least 2 months old and dogs at least 3 months old to be sterilized. We have an age limit of 6 years for dogs and cats.

  • Dogs must be on a leash and cats in a carrier when they arrive for their appointment. Carriers are available for purchase for $7.50.

  • Surgery appointment check-in is at 7:45 a.m. for dogs and 8 a.m. for cats. Please arrive as close to your appointment time as possible and notify us if you will be late.

  • Dogs must be picked up at 4 p.m. and cats at 4:30 p.m. Make sure to keep the animal in a safe, warm place overnight until the effects of the anesthesia have worn off.

  • We recommend that your pets be up to date on vaccines at least 2 weeks prior to surgery with the DAPP (distemper/parvo - for dogs) or FVRCP (distemper/upper respiratory - for cats) to help prevent disease spread. Vaccination will make it less likely that your pet will either contract a disease or lessen the severity of the disease if your pet does contract it. Vaccinations prior to spay/neuter may be obtained at our vaccine clinic by appointment only, there is no exam fee for this service.

  • Vaccine packages are available at the time of surgery.

  •  No food after midnight the night prior to surgery for adult cats and dogs, but water is fine up until surgery. Puppies and kittens under 4 months will need a tablespoon of wet food in the morning prior to surgery.

  • If you have concerns about your pet after surgery, please contact us to schedule a free recheck appointment. Please contact your regular veterinarian or the Southwest Animal Emergency Clinic (435) 673-3191 if you are calling after hours or when our clinic is closed (Fri–Sun).
