Admission

You are here

The Humane Society of Utah works hard to ensure that every healthy and treatable pet that enters our facility will be placed in a loving home.

* If you find a stray animal, please contact your local animal control facility. You can find this list by clicking on the Wasatch Front Animal Control List below. By taking the animal to your local animal control services, they will have a better chance of being reunited with their family who may be searching for them in their local area.

Welcome to our Admission Department.

HSU is an open-admission shelter, meaning that our doors are always open for any animal that we can legally accept. We are not suited to accommodate pets such as reptiles, fish or exotic animals and we encourage you to contact a rescue group that specializes in these species first. We do not accept livestock. Please contact your local animal control services or rescue group specializing in your animal if you have a question. Contact the Department of Wildlife Resources for issues concerning wildlife. Factors like temperament, age and health are considered before animals are put up for adoption. A surrender fee is requested for all owner-surrendered pets.

An appointment should be scheduled if you have more than five (5) animals to surrender at one time. If you would like to read more about our shelter before surrendering your pet, please visit our FAQ section.

If you have lost a pet, read our tips below.

Things to consider when surrendering your pet

After I surrender my pet to the HSU, can I receive information about my pet?

The HSU does not release any information on the status of an animal once it has been surrendered to us.

As a member of the Best Friends Animal Society No Kill Utah (NKUT) Coalition, our goal is to eliminate euthanasia of healthy and treatable pets. We are working with other animal welfare organizations both statewide and nationally to achieve this goal. However, we cannot guarantee that any animal will be adopted.

What animals can the HSU not accept?

We cannot accept any animal that has bitten a person within the last ten days. By law, such an animal must be taken to your local animal control facility.

We cannot accept wildlife. Please contact the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (801) 538-4700 for assistance with wildlife. In the case of skunks, raccoons and coyotes, contact the Utah Department of Agriculture at (801) 538-7100.

Exotic animal requirements

Exotic animals (birds, reptiles, amphibians, etc.) must be turned in with the proper caging and other specialized equipment.

Salt Lake County Animal Services

Per an arrangement with the HSU and Salt Lake County Animal Services (SLCoAS), any animals surrendered to us by residents living within the jurisdiction areas of SLCoAS who were previously adopted from SLCoAS will be returned to SLCoAS.

Surrender profile for your pet

If you have decided to turn over your pet to the HSU, we ask that you fill out the surrender profile below, print the completed document and bring it with you to the HSU Admission Department with the animal.

Surrendering your pet can be a sad and stressful situation. By completing this profile in advance, you will have the time and attention necessary to provide the most accurate information. Accurate and detailed profiles help us to match pets with the best families.

Any animal showing very aggressive or unsociable behavior during the administration of a nationally accredited temperament test or during a veterinary examination may not be eligible for adoption.

Lost Pets Tips

If you have found a lost or stray pet, please take them to your local animal control agency. HSU cannot take in stray pets and requires proof of ownership for surrendered pets. Since owners will be searching in their local area, the chances of finding their pet are higher at those shelters.

If you have lost your pet, the Humane Society of Utah urges you to visit your local Animal Control shelter first. Contact our Admission Department during regular business hours at (801) 261-2919 ext. 295 if you do not locate your pet through Animal Control first.

We encourage you to view our Stray Listing Search linked to several other shelters. Visit local shelters and veterinary clinics in person since it may be difficult to find a pet based on a verbal description or photo.

We also invite you to visit our Admission Department during regular business hours to view our Stray Book and fill out a lost pet profile. You are also welcome to give us a flyer to hang in our Admission lobby.

Remember to keep checking with us and other shelters as stray holding periods depends on when the animal is received. Some individuals attempt to find owners on their own before bringing the animal to a shelter. Also, try the Facebook Group: Utah Lost and Found Pets. Read more tips at PawBoost and consider using My Lost Pet Alert services.

We strongly recommend having your pet microchipped as it is a safe and permanent way to identify your animal.
