MURRAY, UT (Aug. 13, 2020) —The Humane Society of Utah extends a thank you to Murray City for its action regarding building safety risks
The Fountain of Youth building has posed significant threats to the safety and well-being of the Humane Society of Utah staff and animals for years. Located next door to the Humane Society of Utah, the abandoned and critically dilapidated complex at 4300 S Commerce Drive in Murray, Utah, has caught fire multiple times in the past few years. The Fountain of Youth building is currently being demolished, thanks to Melinda Greenwood, Murray City community and economic development director.
"We are very pleased with the city's response," said Vaughn Maurice, Humane Society of Utah executive director. "The entire complex has been a source of significant safety concerns to our shelter for too long."
The Fountain of Youth building and the surrounding property has become a magnet for illegal activity. In addition to fighting multiple fires, city authorities have responded to numerous complaints about trespassers, property damage and drug paraphernalia.
A serious two-alarm fire on May 14, 2020, and a call for help from the Humane Society of Utah were the final push the city needed to encourage the property owners to eliminate the needless danger posed by the abandoned structures.
