Action Alert: Universal Charitable Deduction

We need your help!
Congress is currently considering legislation that will increase charitable giving to nonprofit organizations such as the Utah Humane Society. Contact your Congressperson and tell them that you support a universal charitable deduction and they should, too.
COVID-19 has greatly impacted many aspects of our lives. One major consequence has been a significant decrease in charitable giving. Donations from the community are crucial to maintaining our life-saving programs. From caring for homeless companion animals and providing emergency medical care to community outreach through humane education and advocacy, none of our work would be possible without your generous donations.
Sen. Mike Lee is part of a bipartisan coalition of senators attempting to establish a universal charitable deduction for individuals and married couples who do not itemize their tax deduction, in addition to the standard deduction. This would be an above-the-line deduction up to one-third of the new standard deduction, which equates to about $4,000 for individuals and $8,000 for married couples. Not only would this help individuals and families decrease their tax liability, it would also encourage charitable donations at a time when nonprofit organizations need it the most.
This is federal legislation, which means that you can help even if you don’t live in Utah! You can find your U.S. senators and their contact information HERE and your U.S. representatives and their contact information HERE.
Below, we have prepared a short message that you are free to use when contacting your legislators, but please feel free to write your own message instead. Thank you for your continued support of the Utah Humane Society!
Dear Sen/Rep. [NAME],
As your constituent, I am urging you to support legislation in favor of a universal charitable deduction. The work of nonprofit organizations in our state is critical. A universal charitable deduction would help individuals and families increase their charitable giving, which in turn helps our communities. Please support this important legislation.
