SUMMER’S THE TIME TO VACCINATE FOR LYME!
Protect Your Dog(s) in Utah’s Great Outdoors!
If you enjoy hiking with your dog(s) in the foothills or up in the mountains, now is the time to protect his/her health with a lyme vaccination. The Humane Society clinic offers the lyme vaccination for $21 (there is no fee for the office visit).
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection primarily transmitted by deer ticks. While many dogs won’t show any outward signs of illness, the most common visible symptoms of the disease are arthritis and lameness due to pain in the joints. Dogs may also experience fever, loss of appetite, and loss of energy.
The standard treatment for lyme is 4 weeks of antibiotic therapy. Dogs usually respond to the treatment within 2 to 3 days if the disease is caught in the earliest stages. However, prevention is the best course of action to manage lyme disease and its risks.
The Humane Society’s walk-in clinic (no appointment needed) can administer the lyme vaccination Tuesday through Friday from 9 am-noon and 1-4 pm. On Saturday, the clinic is open from 9 am to 11:45 a.m.
