“HSU “BIG, OLD DOG” SPECIAL"
With the hope of encouraging more people to consider adopting a bigger dog who is past the “puppy stage,” the Humane Society is promoting a “Big, Old Dog Special.” Effective immediately, any dog in our shelter two (2) years of age on up and/or weighing 50 pounds or more will be available for adoption for just $37.50 (VIP exceptions may apply).
“While we continue to experience a strong and steady adoption rate for smaller dogs, including Heigl’s Hounds of Hope from Los Angeles, we want to make sure all of the wonderful big dogs in our kennels aren’t overlooked,” says HSU Executive Director Gene Baierschmidt. “Adopting an older dog makes a statement about compassion and the value of life at all stages.”
Older dogs lose their homes for a variety of reasons...and most of them have nothing to do with the dog, but rather with problems experienced by the person or family surrendering the animal. Death of a guardian, lack of time, a change in work schedule, a new baby, moving to another city or state, allergies, a change in “lifestyle” and a prospective spouse who doesn’t like dogs...those are just some of the reasons animals are surrendered to shelters. In fact, HSU often receives expensive, well-bred dogs from owners who can no longer assume responsibility for their adult pet.
Older dogs usually have had some training (obedience & house manners!), understand the meaning of “no,” have been socialized, appreciate love and attention and become instant companions. They’re also a “known commodity,” easy to assess for behavior and temperament. Plus you don’t have to guess how big they will become!
The health of the big, old(er) dogs at the Humane Society of Utah is assessed by the HSU’s own vets. The cost of caring for any dog will vary depending upon a multitude of factors. In many cases though, the annual cost of caring for an adult dog is less than routine medical attention for a puppy.
“You can give an older dog the best years of his life,” adds Baierschmidt. “At the same time you’ll be bringing a wonderful addition into your family.”
