HUMANE SOCIETY: LIVE ANIMALS AS EASTER PETS A TERRIBLE IDEA

The Humane Society of Utah is issuing its annual appeal to the public to refrain from purchasing live bunnies, chicks, ducklings, and other traditional Easter symbols as pets at this time of year. "Most city-dwelling children don't know how to handle or care for baby fowl or rabbits, who often become the victims of unintentional but nevertheless cruel abuse," said HSU Executive Director Gene Baierschmidt. "Furthermore, those animals that do not die from mistreatment within a short time can grow up to be adults with special environmental and dietary needs who are not as cute and appealing as they were when they were babies. Few people are willing to make the special effort required to provide proper care for them."

National statistics indicate that within the first few weeks of Easter an estimated 30% of all Easter "pets" die and another 60% to 70% are abandoned or turned in to shelters. "That means that almost the total number of Easter animals who are purchased for this holiday are dead by the end of the next month," said Mr. Baierschmidt. "It's not a very positive way to commemorate an event that's supposed to be a celebration of life."

The Humane Society urges people to avoid obtaining live animals for Easter and instead buy stuffed toys or candy.
