HUMANE SOCIETY PRESENTS "COMPASSION AWARD"

TO UTAH’S SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE, GREG CURTIS

On Friday, February 1st, at 9:30 AM at the State Capitol Building, officials of the Humane Society of Utah will present Speaker of the House Greg J. Curtis with a plaque honoring him for his continued support of animal-protection legislation over the years. "We deeply appreciate the efforts of one of our leading lawmakers to bring humanity and advancement to our state’s codes," says HSU Executive Director Gene Baierschmidt. "The kinds of proposals Representative Curtis has stood behind are important to all Utahns — not just those who care about animals, but those who care about people — in short, about the standards that humankind sets for its own behavior."

The presentation will thank Speaker Curtis for his encouragement of the passage of "Henry’s Law," the bill which would have made deliberate animal torture a third-degree felony, as well as other laws that offer protection to living beings less able than the aggressor to defend themselves from cruelty and abuse. "This includes children, women, and the elderly, " says Mr. Baierschmidt. "Greg Curtis is a voice for the voiceless and a helper of the helpless, and the Humane Society is proud to acknowledge and honor his efforts."
