HUMANE SOCIETY OFFERING $2,500 REWARD IN CASE OF ABANDONED PUPPIES
Thirteen puppies were abandoned in a Riverdale Dumpster two days ago, and a dozen of them died. The Humane Society of Utah says there was no excuse for it. "Many alternatives are available to people who can’t or don’t want to keep animals," says HSU Executive Director Gene Baierschmidt, citing animal-control facilities, rescue groups, and individual contacts. "If those pups had been brought to our shelter, they could have been adopted to good, loving homes the same day. What a brutal thing to do under any circumstances – and it seems even more shocking when it happens in what is supposed to be a season of love and goodwill."
Animal abandonment is a Class B misdemeanor under current Utah statutes, and the Humane Society wants to see that whoever dumped these puppies is brought to justice. The organization is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who committed the crime. "This has outraged the community," said Mr. Baierschmidt. "We’ve already had several calls from members of the public who want to contribute to the reward fund, and we’re hoping that this will provide some incentive for people who know anything about the incident to come forward."
Anyone having information should call 261-2919.
