REWARD CLIMBS TO $8,000 FOR CONVICTION IN BRUTAL SLAYING OF HORSE

Last September, a Washington County rancher found one of his horses, "Crookneck," dead — riddled with almost 50 shots from a small-caliber gun. The Humane Society of Utah immediately responded to the grisly news with outrage, specifically because all the wounds were inflicted in the animal’s abdomen and back. "This horse died a slow, agonizing death," said HSU Executive Director Gene Baierschmidt. The Society posted a reward of $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooter, and a little later and additional $2,000 was added by friends of Crookneck’s owner.

Today, an anonymous benefactor donated another $1,000 to the fund, bringing the total to $8,000. "People who do things like what was done to Crookneck always have to talk about it to somebody, somewhere, some time," said Mr. Baierschmidt. "Eventually the word is going to get around to people who will be willing to tell the authorities about it for that kind of money."

Anyone with that information should call 261-2919, ex. 210.
