LITTLE DOGS GET BIG DEAL AT HUMANE SOCIETY - "PETITE PALS" TRAINING

This fall the Humane Society of Utah is hosting a new basic obedience course on Wednesday evenings designed specifically for dogs weighing 30 pounds or less. The new class, taught by professional "Handle with Care" dog trainer Michelle Rizzi, allows smaller breeds to receive basic training in a relaxed environment without the distraction of perceived threats from bigger dogs.

Developed by Pia Silvani, a certified dog trainer who is the head of training and behavior at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison, NJ, the class offers positive, reward-based techniques that enhance the bonds between dogs and their human companions.

Small dogs often have unique issues like persistent barking, potty problems, and excessive fearfulness which are frequently not addressed in obedience classes involving larger dogs. In the Petite Pals class, small dogs have their own curriculum and are given the time they need to concentrate on their behavior. Caregivers of smaller breeds can take their dogs through obedience training in a stress-free environment where they can learn to better control and earn the respect of their dogs.

Michelle Rizzi, who also offers puppy socialization as well as three levels of dog training for all breeds at the Humane Society, says, "I’m already seeing results with the little dogs in the Petite Pals program. Both the dogs and their people are able to relax and focus on training. It’s been a rewarding experience for everyone."

Each course lasts for six weeks, and will be repeated on a continuing basis. The fee is $70, and classes are held each Wednesday at 6:15 PM at the Humane Society of Utah, 4242 South 300 West. For more information on the Petite Pals training program, call Michelle Rizzi at (801) 583-3369, or look online at www.hwcdogtraining.com.
