"HENRY’S HEROES" GET SB 190 PASSED IN SECONDSENATE READING

SB 190, the bill making the deliberate torture of an animal a third-degree felony, today passed its second Senate reading by a vote of 15-11 and tomorrow morning will have its third reading. If it passes there, it will then go to the House of Representatives to be heard, if there is time before the Legislature adjourns on February 28th. The bill is popularly known as "Henry’s Law" in honor of Henry, the small black dog whose story inspired support for tougher cruelty legislation after he was put into a hot oven and left there for five minutes. Those who have worked to get the legislation through have come to be known as "Henry’s Heroes," and the following senators are the special heroes responsible for today’s advancement: Gene Davis, Mike Dmitrich, Scott McCoy, Peter Knudson, Ed Mayne, Michael Waddoups, Curtis Bramble, and Sheldon Killpack.

Officials of the Humane Society of Utah expressed gratitude to these lawmakers and thanked them for standing up for this important issue. The 15-11 vote was close, but HSU Executive Director Gene Baierschmidt is hoping that the bill will pass successfully out of the Senate.

The Society urges members of the community to contact the "Hero Senators" and let them know that their action is deeply appreciated. For more information, check the Society’s website at www.utahhumane.org.
