Once again the official season of love and good will is here, and the Humane Society of Utah is asking members of the community to include the homeless animals of the shelter in their plans by participating in the special holiday gift drive through December 31st.

HUMANE SOCIETY OF UTAH ASKS FOR STRICTER POLICIES GOVERNING BYU’S ACQUISITION OF ANIMAL SPECIMENS Friday, November 23, 2007
Officials of the Humane Society of Utah have joined a growing chorus of protesters, including the Humane Society of the United States, who are disturbed over the recent action taken by Brigham Young University in recruiting the services of a BYU benefactor and trophy hunter to kill an endangered white rhino in Africa and bring parts of the animal’s body back to be publicly stuffed and put on display at the university’s Monte L. Bean Life Sciences Museum.

REWARD CLIMBS TO $8,000 FOR CONVICTION IN BRUTAL SLAYING OF HORSE Friday, November 23, 2007
Last September, a Washington County rancher found one of his horses, "Crookneck," dead — riddled with almost 50 shots from a small-caliber gun. The Humane Society of Utah immediately responded to the grisly news with outrage, specifically because all the wounds were inflicted in the animal’s abdomen and back. "This horse died a slow, agonizing death," said HSU Executive Director Gene Baierschmidt. The Society posted a reward of $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooter, and a little later and additional $2,000 was added by friends of Crookneck’s owner.
