Over a period of weeks last October, Clint Wilkes collected free kittens through newspaper classified ads and then gruesomely tortured them, apparently in order to maintain contact with a former girlfriend by asking her to help with the injured animals.

SALT LAKE COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES TO VOLUNTEER AT HUMANE SOCIETY Thursday, March 22, 2007
Starting today and continuing every Thursday for the next six weeks, officers from the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Department will be at the Humane Society of Utah’s shelter, located at 4242 South 300 West, to volunteer their services on behalf of the animals there. From 1:00 to 5:00 PM, as many as 20 deputies will be on hand to walk dogs, socialize with the cats and rabbits, and assist potential adopters who visit the shelter.

"MARDI GRAS IN THE MOUNTAINS," TO BENEFIT HUMANE SOCIETY Monday, March 05, 2007
On Wednesday, March 21st, the Bobbye and Jerry Sloan Hand-in-Hand Foundation will sponsor its first local fund raising event, whose proceeds will benefit the Humane Society of Utah, among other charities. At 6:30 PM, the "Mardi Gras in the Mountains" celebrity-waiter dinner will begin at The Point Restaurant at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Local celebrities, including Jazz Head Coach Jerry Sloan and members of the Jazz basketball team, will be waiting patrons’ tables at the event.

MARCH MICROCHIP MADNESS AT HUMANE SOCIETY Thursday, March 01, 2007
From Saturday, March 10th, through the end of the month, any pet can get an identification microchip implant for only $15 at the Humane Society of Utah’s clinic when any other clinic service, such as vaccinations or heartworm testing, is purchased. In addition, the pet will receive a free identification tag, which will be engraved with the animal’s name and address right there at the Humane Society.

SB 190, FELONY-LEVEL ANIMAL TORTURE BILL, DIES IN HOUSE Thursday, March 01, 2007
Last night at midnight time ran out for the 2007 Utah State Legislative session, and SB 190, which would have made the deliberate, egregious torture of domestic pets a third-degree felony, died after a 15-minute discussion on the House floor. An amendment was proposed and approved three minutes before midnight, which meant that the bill would have to go back through the entire process to be passed in its amended form. This step in actuality killed the bill.
