FELONY-LEVEL ANIMAL TORTURE BILL PASSES IN SENATE ---LANDMARK LEGISLATION COULD MAKE HISTORY
Wednesday, February 27, 2008

Today, by a vote of 21-6, the Utah State Senate has successfully passed SB 297, the compromise bill that would make the deliberate torture of a cat or dog a third-degree felony on the first offense, and leaves the current animal cruelty code intact. It will now go to the House of Representatives, and if it passes there, Utah will become the 44th state in America to have a felony-level animal protection law on the books.

UTAH COULD HAVE LANDMARK LEGISLATION FOR CATS AND DOGS
Monday, February 25, 2008

Today SB 279, a bill sponsored by Sen. Allen Christensen, was introduced in the Senate Human Resources Committee and passed unanimously from there to the Senate floor. The Humane Society of Utah and other animal-advocacy groups throughout the state expressed deep gratification at this action, since this bill is almost identical to Rep. Sheryl Allen’s HB 470 in that it would make the deliberate torture of a cat or dog a third-degree felony on the first offense, and also keeps the existing animal-cruelty codes intact.

Wednesday, February 13, 2008

As the Utah State Legislature does its best to reduce our animal-protection laws to meaningless slap-on-the-wrist codes, and while at the same time three-quarters of the population are demanding tougher penalties for deliberate cruelty to animals, three more episodes have occurred in rapid succession that would appear to bear out the majority opinion that our statutes are already too weak.

On Thursday, February 7th, at 12:00 noon, the Humane Society of Utah and the Animal Advocacy Alliance of Utah will hold a press conference inside the lobby of the Senate East Building (just west of the cafeteria) to explain why it is imperative that SB 117, sponsored by Sen.
