HUMANE SOCIETY: SB 117 MUST NOT PASS! Friday, January 25, 2008
The animal-welfare community has been thrown a curve ball by the introduction of Sen. Allen Christensen’s bill, SB 117. It changes the entire trajectory of the movement to pass "Henry’s Law," since it would not merely make deliberate animal torture a third-degree felony only when committed a second time within five years of the first act — it also removes many of the existing protections in the current animal code, thus weakening the entire animal cruelty code. If passed, SB 117 would set the state of Utah back decades in its regulations.

HUMANE SOCIETY GEARING UP TO GET FELONY-LEVEL ANIMAL TORTURE BILL PASSED IN 2008 Friday, January 18, 2008
As the 2008 session of the Utah State Legislature convenes, the Humane Society of Utah is telling the public, "If you’re tired of hearing stories like the one about Henry, the little Chihuahua-mix dog who was blinded in one eye and cooked in a hot oven, or Crookneck the horse, who was shot 50 times in the back and belly and left to die a slow, agonizing death — and if you’re tired of knowing that these actions are only considered misdemeanors in Utah while 43 other states classify such crimes as felonies — you can get involved in changing things."

HUMANE SOCIETY HAS RECORD YEAR FOR SPAY/NEUTER SURGERIES, HIGH ADOPTION RATE Friday, January 04, 2008
In 2007, the Humane Society of Utah for the first time surgically sterilized over 10,000 animals in its clinic and also found good new homes for an impressive 89% of its adoptable shelter animals. "The only way to end the problem of homeless and unwanted animals is through spaying and neutering, and through finding good homes for the ones already in shelters," says HSU Executive Director Gene Baierschmidt.
