UPDATE ON HENRY THE DOG-IN-OVEN CASE - MARC VINCENT PLEADS GUILTY

MarkVincentOn September 18th Humane Society of Utah representatives were present at the hearing for Marc Vincent, the man accused of, among other things, putting his wife’s dog, Henry, into a hot oven for at least five minutes.

Vincent pleaded guilty before Judge William Barrett, who has scheduled Vincent’s sentencing for Monday, November 6th. We are still urging the community to encourage officials to hand down the maximum possible penalty under current Utah law for Marc Vincent, and also petition legislators to make animal cruelty a third-degree felony here, as it already is in 41 other states. Under the current law, the stiffest conviction possible is that of a Class A misdemeanor, which carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $2,500 fine. The maximum penalty for a third-degree felony is five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Once again, we are asking you to contact the District Attorney, David E. Yocom. Politely ask that the maximum sentence currently possible be handed down, and explain that this is important partly because cruelty to animals is often a foreshadowing of violence against human beings.

There are three ways to do this:

1. By e-mail at districtatty@co.slc.ut.us or to Deputy District Attorney Howard Lemcke at hlemcke@slco.org

2. By sending a brief, handwritten letter to this address:

David E. Yocom
District Attorney for Salt Lake County
11 E. Broadway #400
Salt Lake City, UT 84111

3. By telephoning the D.A.’s office at (801) 468-3300

Again, HSU is following the case closely and will be present for the sentencing hearing as well. We’ll keep you informed as new developments arise. For now, please keep contacting the District Attorney’s office (see addresses above) and ask that the most severe penalty possible under the current law should be given to Marc Vincent.
