What About Litter?

Ferrets usually aren't picky about the type of litter in their box, only that it is clean. Shredded newspaper litters or sterilized egg crate litters are recommended by some veterinarians as being the safest for ferrets. The pelleted forms of these litters are often preferred because they are less likely to be accidentally kicked out of the box. I tell ferret owners to stay away from clay litters because they contain a lot of dust, which can irritate a ferret's sensitive respiratory sys- tem. I also do not use litters with added scents or fresheners. Avoid clumping litters made for cats as well because they are designed to expand to several times their original size when wet. Should ferrets ingest some litter that sticks to their coat or feet, it can cause a serious intestinal blockage.
